Guys check this out, these dudes that build drones that use FLIR tagged along with us durring a SAR training. Also you can see me being a terrible video subject when being interviewed on the spot. This was my first time being team lead so I was over thinking everything and the camera wasn’t helping hahah. But great video if you wanna see a small example of what Pacific Northwest Search and Rescue does. It was a great day on the hill, and really hot as you can see, it was about 60 degrees (Fahrenheit). Some really cool dudes, and it was a great training day.

So I was asked to post a more detailed version of the cook kit in my Search and Rescue pack recently. So here is a very quick and little post about what is in it. I do have a food bag that is separate from the cook kit, so all of my meal stuff is in that sack. Also the knife (DPx Hest Original) and ferrocerium rod are in my chest harness and not with the cook kit, they are just there for size and to show how I start my stove (Bic is back up).
Photo 1: So The start of it is a Snow Peak Hybrid Summit Cookset. It is a fantastic and tough little set. I have really abused (as you can see) mine and it still is doing just fine. The mesh bag needs to be replaced, but thats the only “failure” I have seen.
Photo 2: Inside the mesh bag is the Summit Cookset with a Sea to Summit titanium spork. Its ok, I snagged it at a free gear swap so not trying to shave every ounce. Plus The long handle makes it great for sturing up freeze-dried or ready to eat meals in their bag.
Photo 3: Inside the Cookset is the rest of the kit. A small Snow Peak 400 Mug and an Optimus Crux. The fule sits on top of all of it inside the bigger container and fits pretty snug. Both the Crux and the Bic lighter fit inside the mug and everything packs down super small. I really like the Crux, I have used it for a while and it boiles up my water super fast every time. It is really ruggedly built and has taken many dings from use but still folds up just fine.
This kit is basically what I carry from Sep-May in my 24hour pack for cold conditions. I prefer this style of cook kit over the jet boils because if you run out of fule your up shit creek. The jet boils are super nice, but I like something I can put on a fire (as you can tell I have) and have it not melt.

Multirotor drone w/ thermal cameras (FLIR). Being tested and used on a Search and Rescue training. This thing was cool, I’ll get the video from the drone soon. The idea for it is that it has on bored thermal cameras and can be released out in the field to scan for bodys or signs of subject(s) that we are looking for. Super excited to start seeing these in the field. The guys that make the drone can be found here, and here is their youtube channel.
